He’s a not-so-typical teacher and aspiring teacher from Adelaide. And he uses POP to max his tax back.
Tell us about your work, Kieren.
“I’m a teacher at a primary school. I work with a lot of kids who come from some rough neighbourhoods, and I’m also heavily involved in extracurricular sports activities. I also run our primary school’s debating team. When I can, I like to write short stories. One day I’ll attempt a novel… one day!”
Come tax-time, what used to go through your brain?
“Someone asked me the other day how I find the energy to be a good teacher? And in this case, I suppose my answer would once have been by not wasting it thinking about tax. To my own detriment, no doubt. Look, tax-time should be less of a stress, but especially when you pour so much energy and creativity into the kids you teach. In the past, it was hard to have any left over to deal with the day-to-day life stuff.”
But not since you started using POP to file your tax return?
“That’s right. It’s funny, I am literally just teaching my Year 4 class how they can harness online tools to solve problems… but when I discovered POP and how it thinks through your tax deductibles for you… well, I thought it was pretty amazing.”
How did POP’s intuitive Max-Deductibles system work for you as a teacher?
“As a teacher, it’s really hard to save. And hard to find time to really work out your tax. I honestly had no idea I qualified for so many deductibles – my upskilling, my travel, my car, my stationary, my films, my books… I mean, I could go on. But suffice to say, POP walked me through it very simply and systematically. This year, getting a decent tax return made all the difference. I was delighted.”
Would you recommend POP to other teacher like yourself?
“Without hesitation. Using POP meant I could put new tyres on my car, and it desperately needed them. For a teacher, that’s a pretty big deal.”
